How long does it take to prepare for each JLPT level?

The pre-2010 JLPT guidelines suggested roughly 150 study hours for the level now called N5, 300 for N4, 600 for N2 and 900 for N1; N3 was added in 2010 and sits between N4 and N2. The current JLPT publishes no official hour targets, and learners without a kanji background often need considerably more, especially for N2 and N1. Treat any hour figure as a rough guide: steady daily study usually beats occasional cramming, and a timed practice test is a better check of readiness than a count of hours.

What is the difference between JLPT levels N1 through N5?

JLPT has five levels, from N5 (easiest) to N1 (hardest). N5 covers basic Japanese in familiar, slow situations; N4 basic everyday Japanese; N3 everyday Japanese at close to natural speed; N2 everyday Japanese plus a range of broader topics; and N1 Japanese used in a wide variety of circumstances. The JLPT does not publish official vocabulary or kanji lists for the current test. Commonly used estimates, carried over from the pre-2010 test specifications, are about 100 kanji and 800 words for N5, 300 kanji and 1,500 words for N4, roughly 650 kanji and 3,000–3,750 words for N3, 1,000 kanji and 6,000 words for N2, and 2,000 kanji and 10,000 words for N1. Every level tests language knowledge (vocabulary and grammar), reading and listening.

How often is the JLPT exam offered and when should I register?

Yes. There are no prerequisites: you can register for any level without passing the ones below it. What matters is choosing a level you can realistically pass, because a failed attempt costs a registration fee and several months of waiting. A timed practice test or a placement check will tell you more than a textbook chapter count. If you need the certificate for a job, school or visa, find out which level is required and aim for that one.

What is a passing score for JLPT and how is it calculated?

Every level is scored out of 180. The overall pass marks are 100 for N1, 90 for N2, 95 for N3, 90 for N4 and 80 for N5. You must also reach a minimum in each scored section. N1, N2 and N3 are scored in three sections (Language Knowledge, Reading and Listening, 0–60 each), with a minimum of 19 in each. N4 and N5 are scored in two sections: Language Knowledge and Reading combined (0–120, minimum 38) and Listening (0–60, minimum 19). Scores are scaled so that results are comparable across test dates, which is why they are not simple percentages of correct answers. Results arrive roughly two to three months after the test.
