Immersive Classroom Approach That Demands Discipline

Minna no Nihongo I provides Japanese-only immersive instruction favored by language schools worldwide, but self-learners must purchase separate grammar notes. After 5 months of dedicated study, I achieved strong N5 fundamentals with natural speech patterns.

First-Hand Experience

I tested Minna no Nihongo I alongside Genki I in 2020 with a study group of four learners. We purchased both the main textbook and the Translation & Grammatical Notes book (English edition), which is essential for self-study—the main text contains only Japanese from page one. The structured dialogue format became familiar quickly; Lesson 3's location dialogue (pages 24-26) taught practical particles through repetition rather than explanation. The pattern practice sections (pages 27-30 each lesson) felt mechanical initially but developed automatic response ability. We met twice weekly, dedicating 2 hours per lesson—one hour for grammar explanation and dialogue practice, another for drill exercises. The audio materials proved essential; the recordings feature natural speed that initially felt too fast but trained our ears effectively. By Lesson 15 (halfway through), we could conduct 5-minute conversations using only Japanese learned from the book. The workbook provides extensive drilling that Genki lacks—sometimes up to 50 sentences per grammar point. I found the kanji introduced more systematically than Genki, with better compound word coverage. Completing all 25 lessons took 5 months, and our group achieved 85% average on practice N5 tests afterward.

Pros

  • Immersive Japanese-only approach develops thinking in Japanese naturally
  • Pattern drills build automatic response and natural speech rhythms
  • Used in professional language schools worldwide (proven methodology)
  • Systematic progression prevents gaps in foundational knowledge
  • Audio materials feature natural pronunciation and speed
  • Extensive workbook exercises provide more practice than competitors
  • Kanji introduced with practical compounds from the start
  • Cultural notes in Translation book provide useful context

Cons

  • Requires purchasing separate Translation & Grammar Notes (adds $20-25)
  • Self-study significantly more challenging than with Genki
  • Dialogues can feel dated and overly formal
  • Limited English explanations even in companion book
  • Grammar notes sometimes too brief for complex concepts
  • Cultural content assumes Japanese business/social context
  • Pattern drilling can feel mechanical and repetitive

Best For

Classroom students with teacher guidance, study groups meeting regularly, learners wanting immersive Japanese-only instruction, those who thrive on structured drilling and repetition

Not Recommended For

Solo self-learners without teacher access, absolute beginners wanting extensive English explanations, casual learners seeking gentle introduction, those on tight budgets (multiple books required)

Our Verdict

Minna no Nihongo I excels as a classroom textbook but demands more effort for self-study than Genki I. The immersive approach develops natural Japanese thinking patterns, but requires discipline and ideally a study partner or teacher. The additional cost of companion materials ($60+ total) and greater difficulty curve make it less accessible than Genki. However, for learners with teacher access or strong self-motivation, Minna's drilling and immersive approach may build stronger fundamentals. Our study group found the structured repetition helpful for retention, and after 5 months we spoke more naturally than peers using only Genki. I recommend Minna for classroom settings or dedicated self-learners; casual learners should choose Genki instead.

More structured than Genki, which I prefer. The all-Japanese approach is challenging but effective. Get the translation and grammar notes book!

I love the systematic approach of Minna. It might seem boring compared to Genki, but the foundation it builds is rock solid.

Used extensively in Japanese language schools for good reason. The grammar progression is logical and the exercises are practical. Essential for serious beginners.
