Gentle Introduction That May Feel Too Slow

Japanese From Zero! 1 eases absolute beginners into Japanese with an extremely gradual approach, integrating romaji before transitioning to hiragana. After 3 months, I had solid pronunciation and basic grammar, but covered less material than Genki I does in similar time.

First-Hand Experience

I recommended Japanese From Zero! 1 to my sister in 2021 when she wanted to learn Japanese casually. She worked through all 13 lessons over 3 months, studying 30-40 minutes three times weekly. The book's progressive introduction of hiragana (adding 5-7 characters every few lessons rather than all at once) reduced her initial overwhelm significantly. Lesson 4 still uses romaji for new vocabulary while previously learned hiragana appears in exercises (pages 89-95), creating a comfortable learning curve. The conversational approach featuring the author teaching students felt more engaging than traditional textbook format. However, by Lesson 8, she felt frustrated with the slow pace—the grammar points covered in 8 lessons roughly equal Genki's first 3 chapters. The "YesJapan.com" website integration provided helpful video lessons; George Trombley's explanations clarified confusing points from the book. The cultural notes and "Real Japanese" sections showing native handwriting added personality other textbooks lack. After completing the book, she could introduce herself, discuss basic hobbies, and read simple hiragana text, but wasn't ready for N5 exam—she needed the second book for complete N5 coverage. The integrated workbook (no separate purchase needed) was convenient and comprehensive.

Pros

  • Extremely gentle learning curve perfect for intimidated beginners
  • Progressive hiragana introduction prevents overwhelm
  • Conversational teaching style more engaging than traditional textbooks
  • Integrated workbook eliminates need for separate purchase
  • Free video lessons on YesJapan.com supplement written content
  • Cultural insights and "Real Japanese" sections add personality
  • Pronunciation guidance more detailed than typical textbooks
  • Affordable single-book price point ($30-35)

Cons

  • Extremely slow pace means less content coverage per time investment
  • Romaji use throughout delays full Japanese immersion
  • Requires 4-5 books in series to reach N5 level fully
  • Limited kanji introduction—hiragana focus only
  • Grammar explanations sometimes oversimplified
  • Fewer exercises per grammar point than Genki or Minna
  • Conversational format may not suit all learning styles
  • Must buy multiple books in series, increasing total cost

Best For

Absolute beginners intimidated by traditional textbooks, casual learners studying for fun rather than exams, those wanting video lesson integration, adults learning Japanese for travel or hobby

Not Recommended For

Serious JLPT test-takers on timeline, learners wanting rapid progress, those comfortable with traditional textbook format, students already knowing hiragana/katakana

Our Verdict

Japanese From Zero! 1 serves its intended audience perfectly: absolute beginners who find traditional textbooks intimidating and want to ease into Japanese gradually. The gentler pace means slower progress, but also higher completion rates for casual learners. My sister finished this book (unlike her two previous attempts with Genki I, which she abandoned). However, serious JLPT students should choose Genki or Minna for more efficient progress—JFZ requires 4-5 books to cover what Genki does in 2. The integrated workbook and free video resources add value, making the series cost-effective if you purchase only Book 1 to decide if Japanese study suits you. For committed learners planning to reach N3+ eventually, start with Genki. For nervous beginners wanting encouragement and gentle introduction, Japanese From Zero! 1 is ideal.
